5 of the Most Common Methods of Water Filtration

It is a great idea to invest in a water filter for your home to ensure everyone there is drinking water that is clean and safe. There are several different filter options available to keep your home and family safe. Here are some of the most common filtration methods.

Ozone

Ozone is made of three oxygen molecules. While it may seem like oxygen would not be effective in cleaning your water, ozone filtration is much more powerful than you may assume. It can remove some contaminants such as pesticides, fungus, organic materials, contaminates, and viruses much more effectively than even chlorine. Another reason it is so popular is that, unlike chlorine, it does not affect the taste or odor of the water.

Reverse Osmosis

Another great filter is a reverse osmosis, or RO, filter. An RO filter works by pushing the water through a semi-permeable membrane to remove the contaminants. It is a popular option because of its effectiveness. It removes 99% of 65 different contaminants, leaving the water clean, and good-tasting.

Activated Carbon

Carbon works to remove water contaminants by chemically bonding to the water when it is poured through the filter. Some of these filters are highly effective in removing several dangerous contaminants including mercury, lead, nitrates, fluoride, and arsenic. Several, however, only serve mainly to remove chlorine from the water. Although it is only one contaminant, removing chlorine from water can greatly improve the taste, smell, and overall quality of the water.

Distillation

This is likely the oldest method of water filtration. Water distillation works by heating water to high temperatures until it vaporizes. The water is then condensed back to liquid to be consumed. This process of water distillation is effective in removing minerals, microorganisms, and chemicals from the water, but does not work to remove most volatile organic chemicals such as chlorine.

Ion Exchange

The ion exchange technology works to replace harmful ions with others that are not harmful. This method is typically used to make water less hard. It will replace the harmful minerals that make water hard with other minerals.

How to Determine the Best Option

The only way to know what water filter is best for your home is to know what your home needs. In order to know the needs of your home, you can have your water tested. With a water test, you can see exactly what specific contaminants are an issue in your home. Once you know the contaminants in your water, you can determine the best filter to target those specific issues.
