Does My Brita Filter Actually Clean My Water?

A Brita is a type of water filter that has become a popular tool for getting clean water. The question is whether or not this water filter makes your tap water truly clean, or is it completely ineffective?

How It Works

This filter is typically used in a large pitcher. You pour your contaminated tap water through the filter and into the pitcher. The filter is made of several components to filter the water including different types of nets, mesh, and sponge-like substances.

Why People Use It

People typically use this type of filter to improve the taste, smell, and overall quality of their water. People tend to like the taste of filtered water over raw tap water. Many people have also heard of all the contaminants found in most tap water and their dangers. They turn to filters like this one to make sure they are drinking safe water. It is important to consider whether or not this filter is really making the water any safe and if it is actually effective.

Contaminants It Filters

Here is a list of contaminants filtered by a Brita filter:

Chlorine (Taste and Odor)

Lead

Mercury

Cadmium

Benzene

Asbestos

Particulates

Copper

Zinc

1, 2, 4 – Trichlorobenzene

TTHMs

Atrazine

Lindane

Trichloroethylene (TCE)

Contaminants It Does Not Filter

Here is just a small list of some of the major and commonly found contaminants not filtered by a Brita filter:

Aluminium

Ammonia

Arsenic

Barium

Chloramine

Chromium

Fluoride

Nitrates/Nitrites

Radium

Selenium

Silver

Uranium

Bacteria

One of the main purposes of a Brita filter is to rid the water of bacteria. Although it does rid the water of bacteria for a good short-term solution, it is not good for the long-term. Studies have found that the bacteria that gets filtered sits in the filter, cultivates, and gets deposited into the other water poured through the filter. It has been found that water filtered through a used Brita filter is often filled with more bacteria than the tap water being filtered.

A Brita filter does do a good job in improving the taste and odor of tap water. If this is important to you, a Brita filter is a good option. It is not however completely effective in purifying tap water and riding it of all contaminants.
