The Best and Worst Sources of Drinking Water

Water is something that is essential for all life, but we are not always provided with water at the quality necessary to keep you healthy. Here are the top sources of drinking water and if they are giving you safe and healthy water.

Tap Water

Dangerous Contaminants

Tap water is the most popular source of drinking water, but also one of the most dangerous. Dangerous contaminants often fill this water. People tend to ignore the danger and levels of these hazardous pollutants.

Legal But Dangerous

Believe it or not, the reason people tend to overlook these issues is that they are entirely legal. Just because they are legal, does not mean they are safe for consumption. Several of these water contaminants pose significant health risks.

Excessive Pollutants

Many of these pollutants are legal in high amounts. Several contaminants are even dangerous in levels way below the allowed numbers.

Water Reports

Although annual water reports are a requirement for each city, they are not always an accurate representation of the water’s quality. The report is an average for the year. This way, cities have the freedom to let the levels of specific contaminants spike for periods of time as long as they can make it average below the legal maximum by the time the reports are due.

Unregulated Contaminants

While there is a long list of regulated water contaminants, there is an even longer list of pollutants that have been found in drinking water but have yet to become regulated. These unregulated contaminants are entirely legal, and the dangers of drinking them are unknown.

Bottled Water

Bottled water is typically the default option for someone who does not want to drink from their tap. Most people, however, are unaware of what it means when they drink a bottle of water.

Environmental Dangers

The disastrous effects plastic has on the environment has become a huge issue and a popular topic of discussion. People are becoming more and more aware of the effect they are having and how they can do their part to better the world around them. One way they can do that is by decreasing their use of plastic water bottles.

25% Is Just Filtered Tap Water

One-fourth of bottled water is sourced directly from tap water. While you may be under the impression that you are drinking pure, fresh spring water, you are likely just drinking filtered tap water. It is good to assume that is what you are drinking unless the bottle says explicitly you are drinking spring water.

Filtered Water

A water filter cleans the best, safest water to drink. There are several to chose from, including fridge filters, faucet filters, and whole house filters. You can decide which is best for you.
